This post is gonna be a little more serious than some others I've posted but stick around till the end as it is important to me.
Now I'm not going to sit here and tell you that I have never in my life prank called somebody. The thing is, I have actually been one of the people that finds prank calling absolutely hysterical which makes me pretty damn awful at it anyway! If I were to ever prank call somebody, the prank would be purely un-hurtful and something that would hopefully make the person on the other end of the line laugh with me.
Recently, somebody who I am very close to received a prank call from a 'No Caller ID' number (which I also have done so PLEASE do not think I am being hypocritical in any manner here) where some false information was given to them about a person they are close to. The information was of a sexual nature and therefore made the person incredibly uncomfortable and angered hearing it. When the information about this person was told to them, they were taken aback, they were hurt and they were lost for words.
You may be thinking 'Megan, why on earth is this bothering you so much?!' Well let me tell you. I know first hand what it feels like to have rumours thrown around about you which are untrue. It hurts and can damage you. Imagine if the prank caller called someone else instead of my close friend who knew the information was rubbish. This person could have begun to spread rumours upon rumours upon rumours and everything would have spiralled out of control and, by the time it reached the person spoken about, it could have been distorted and lots of people would know of the rumour.
I know I'm taking this very seriously and, I think, rightly so. Pranking is funny to a certain extent. But using your 'power' to prank (I use this word as I can't think of any other word for it) to potentially hurt someone, even if in the moment you find it hilarious, is wrong.
Think before you act. Not JUST when pranking someone. In ALL scenarios.
